A New Program Designed Just for Kids!
We are pleased and excited to announce a new program MRI-4-KIDS at All County MRI offering pediatric and adult sedation for MRI’s and CAT scans.

The program is run under the direct supervision of Dr. Craig Merola, a Board Certified Anesthesiologist specializing in pediatric sedations. Dr. Merola is a partner in North American Partners in Anesthesia (NAPA). NAPA is one of the largest private anesthesia practices on the east coast. He is a member of the Society of Pediatric Anesthesia, The Society of Ambulatory Anesthesia, The American Society of Anesthesiologists and the New York State Society of Anesthesiologists. He has authored and coauthored many papers on sedation and has been practicing since 1990.

The Team

Pediatric Anesthesiologist: An experienced board certified pediatric anesthesiologist trained in sedating children will be responsible for the well being of your child.

Propofol will be administered intravenously. It is extremely reliable, and is very short acting. Once the drug is stopped, the child will awaken in about ten minutes. After about 30 minutes, the child will be ready to go home.

Pediatric Registered Nurse: She will be present for the entire time you are at All-County. She will assist the anesthesiologist and will try to make you and your child’s experience more comfortable. She will be the contact person for any questions you might have concerning the sedation.

Radiologist: A board certified radiologist will read your child’s scans and send the report to your doctor within 24hrs. In many cases, your child’s exams are available to your doctor on a secure, password-protected web site within minutes of the end of the exam.

MRI Technologist: A certified RT will be the person taking the pictures. They will determine which pictures to take, in what sequences and in what way under the direction of the radiologist. The RT’s job is to tailor the exam to provide the most information to your doctor.

What You Need To Do

It is important that your child does not have any solid foods or unclear liquids 6 hours prior to the exam. Apple juice, Jell-O, soda, Gatorade, and Pedialyte are acceptable up until 2 hours prior to the exam.

Please bring your doctors prescription, insurance card, pre-authorization number (if required by your insurance plan) and picture identification.

What to Expect

On the day before the exam, the pediatric RN will contact you to discuss your child’s medical history and to go over any questions or concerns you might have
regarding the sedation. Upon your arrival, they will have you wait in their child-friendly waiting area. Their pediatric nurse will come out to greet you and go over any last minute questions. You will be escorted into the MRI scanning room to hold your child as they gently fall off to sleep. The anesthesia team will place all of the appropriate monitors on your child and position them in the scanner. You have the option of remaining in the room during the entire scan, or if you wish you may wait in the recovery area for your child. Upon completion, you and your child will be escorted to a comfortable recovery area. Once awake, and your child is drinking, you will be discharged from the facility. The pediatric anesthesia team will make a follow-up phone call the next day to evaluate your overall experience.
