An MRI utilizes combinations of radio waves and magnetic fields to generate highly detailed contrast and resolution for imaging of the human body. An MRI is completely noninvasive and utilizes the properties of magnetism to create three-dimensional, internal images of the soft tissues of the body, including the brain, spinal cord, muscles and joints. An MRA is an MRI of the blood vessels.
An MRI is a completely safe and easy procedure for our patients. Absolutely no radiation is used. Our Elmont, Flushing, and College Point facilities have Open MRI machines, which produce high detailed images, but in an open air environment. This benefits those patients that experience claustrophobic feelings. Our Plainview office is outfitted with a short-bore, high-field magnet made by Siemens. This magnet is a very strong magnet, thereby creating extremely high resolution images. Finally, our Garden City location contains an Extremity MRI. This machine is used for studies of the body, such as hands, feet, elbows, and knees. Contact our staff at (516) 437-3600 to find out which exam and location is appropriate for your needs. An MRI is available at all of our locations.
There are various MRI examinations that can be done, including:
| • MRI of the Head • MRI of the Neck • MRI of the Spine • MRI of the Chest |
• MRI of the Knee • MRI of the Foot • MRI of the Hand • MRI of the Elbow |
• MRA of the Carotids • MRA of the Brain • MRA of the Aorta |
Computed Tomography (CT) Scan, aka CAT Scan
A CT scanner uses x-ray technology to take images of your body from different angles in order to create highly detailed cross sectional view of the human body. We have CT Scanners in three of our facilities: Elmont, Flushing, and Plainview. We recently purchased the new GE Lightspeed Four Slice CT for our Elmont facility in an effort to update our medical systems and offer the best technology for our patients. This new machine will reduce your examination time by 75%. A CT scan is painless and non-invasive. CT Scans are available at our Elmont, Flushing, and Plainview offices.
There are various CT examinations that can be conducted, including:
| • CT of the Abdomen • CT of the Chest • CT of the Head |
• CT of the Sinuses • CT of the Orbits • CT of the Spine |
• 3D Reconstruction • 3D Dental Scans |
Bone Densitometry is performed on the CT machine. Our technicians measure bone density in order to determine osteoporosis accurately.
An ultrasound examination is a method of obtaining images of the inside of the human body using high frequency sound waves. No radiation or invasive procedures are utilized. Ultrasound is a great way to view the internal organs of the body, including, the heart, liver, spleen, pancreas, kidneys, and bladder. Ultrasound images are shot real time, and so allow medical professionals to see blood flow and movement within the body. Ultrasound is available at our Elmont, Flushing, and Plainview offices.
There are various sono examinations that can be conducted, including:
| • Ultrasound of the Carotids • Ultrasound of the Abdomen • Ultrasound of the Pelvis |
• Ultrasound of the Breast • Ultrasound of the Pediatric Skull • Vascular Ultrasound |
A mammogram is an extremely low dosage x-ray system used to examine the breast. The images taken by a mammography machine are viewed by our radiologist in conjunction with a Computer Aided Detection (CAD) system. Early detection for breast cancer is key, which is why our doctors use the best, and most sensitive, systems available to review our patient’s films. Mammography is available at our Elmont and Flushing locations.
There are several types of X-ray procedures that we perform. The following procedures are some examples.
- Bone X-rays are used to assess bone fractures using two to three views of the affected area.
- Chest X-Rays evaluate the heart, lungs and chest cavity. Chext X-Rays can be used to assess pneumonia, heart failure, emphysema, and lung cancer.
- Spine X-Rays are used to rule out stenosis, disc alignment, and scoliosis.
- Intravenous Pyelogram (IVP) is an x-ray examination of the kidneys, ureters, and urinary bladder. An IVP study uses a contrast material to enhance the x-ray images. The exam enables the radiologist to review the anatomy and the function of the kidneys and urinary tract.
- Barium Enema X-Ray examinations are contrast studies of the large intestine.
- Upper Gastrointestinal X-Ray examinations are contrast studies of the stomach and intestines.
